Leicester City fell to an honestly inspiring defeat to Premier League giants Liverpool in the EFL Cup. Let us have a look at what they did right and wrong.

Enzo Maresca made most of the right calls. The King Power Club may have lost, but we were against superior opposition with a wealth of expensive talent, and the Foxes did play to the task they were given by the head coach.

A third minute strike by the clinical and top goalscoring Kasey McAteer saw Leicester take an early shock lead against the EPL opponents. And, well, it gave the players something to actually play for, and we saw the Foxes fighting hard to maintain the lead against an onslaught from the Reds. Of course, with their quality, Liverpool in the second half tore the midfield and wings apart, leaving LCFC exposed and conceding thrice.

Leicester City’s Defenders

Firstly, an applaud to Harry Souttar and Conor Coady. One has been injured for our EFL Championship campaign, the other an unwanted outcast due to his play style. The pair performed excellently against the storm which consistently broke through our midfield – particularly where the defensively less-inclined Cesare Casadei was positioned.

The former England international Coady showed his depth of experience and positional expertise during this fixture. With five blocked shots, five clearances, two clearances off the goal line, and an interception, it is clear why Maresca wanted the accredited centre back. When Liverpool looked like scoring and Jakub Stolarczyk was out of position, Coady was there to save the day. This could only last for a short period.

Meanwhile, the Australian centre back has been ignored for much of the season, which is annoying in my opinion as the player is a great defender, and can be coached to improve his passing. Anyway, with seven clearances, the towering defender showed what he was here to do: break up attacking plays and knock the ball far away from our goal. Once again, this worked very well in the first half, but fell apart a little in the second where the Merseyside based team was able to dribble passed the centre back with explosive pace.

Either way, Leicester City can be comfortable in the knowledge that they have great depth in their defenders, and we have finally seen what Souttar and Coady can do when paired together. The next positive is more obvious.
