It appears Leicester have settled on this CB amid transfer update

Even the best-laid plans of intriguing LCFC head coach Russell Martin often go awry, as witnessed during his spells at Southampton and Rangers. As a matter of fact, those unforeseen issues on the South Coast and north of the border were arguably entirely of the former Scotland international's own making.

The 40-year-old's problems were rooted in tactical missteps and a stubborn reluctance to abandon failing methods. This ultimately turned his Saints tenure from disappointing to disaster, and led to a swift dismissal from the Gers early in his time at Ibrox.

At Leicester City, by contrast, Martin has brought nothing but positivity to the club, the squad, the fans and the transfer business on Filbert Way. Every player who could command a decent fee was sold, all deadwood and unwanted players were discarded to the delight of the Blue Army, and he has successfully brought in international-calibre players.

Signings actually include plenty of attacking midfielders along with wingers, two goalkeepers, a full-back - and finally a striker. Centre forward Admir Bristric's arrival was, at last, confirmed on Tuesday morning after a week of speculation.

Yet even the most foresighted and prudent plans can topple like a house of cards in an instant, and the East Midlanders have suffered one major setback, as noted by Martin himself. Key centre-back Ben Nelson has been sidelined with an ACL rupture that will keep him out for a large part of the season, and potentially the entire campaign.

That is a blow softened only slightly by Martin's brave face and comments about Nelson's importance to the squad both on and off the pitch. The Foxes Academy product had already been linked with high-profile moves to clubs like Manchester United and Torino in Italy, further underscoring what a significant loss this is.

Meanwhile, fellow centre-back Harry Souttar could depart for Sheffield United, and Italian defender Caleb Okoli has been linked with Serie A. Although, this hearsay feels unlikely unless Okoli would be a backup, which still potentially leaves Leicester short at the back.

John Souttar to Leicester City?

To address this gap, it appears the Leicestershire club are targeting John Souttar, brother of Harry, which also serves as a strong indication that the latter may well be on his way out of the King Power exit door. This potential signing would shore up defensive options in LE2, though it also signals a major reshuffle in the defensive ranks that Martin presumably anticipated when he first took charge.
