Jamie Vardy opens door for Leicester return in League One next season

Right now, Leicester City Football Club and its loyal fan base require nothing more than Jamie Vardy's return, along with his tenacity and goals, to save the Foxes from obscurity. The talismanic striker, currently plying his trade with Cremonese in the sun-drenched climes of Italy, represents the flickering heartbeat of a club heading to the depths of League One.

Yet a romantic homecoming to Filbert Way possibly remains tethered to a cold reality: the departure of chief football officer Jon Rudkin is also preferable and, arguably, necessary. The two scenarios may be mutually exclusive.

As Foxes of Leicester and yours truly previously reported, Rudkin is seemingly at fault for a chasm at King Power Stadium. A proverbial City civil war that fractured the institution's very foundation.

Even the venerable Susan Whelan was apparently a casualty of this internal strife. When pressed on Rudkin's role in his departure, or whether he would grace LE2 while the CFO remains, Vardy offered a rather large inference, suggesting a deep-seated incompatibility or aversion.

​While "Vards" faces an expiring contract in Lombardy, Gazzetta dello Sport claim the former England international longs for one last hoorah with his beloved Foxes. The prospect of Vardy returning as a player-coach is ideal for LCFC: his ability to impart predatory knowledge to a new generation is invaluable.

Allegedly, the iconic "JV9" might perhaps reject Cremo's extension offer due to a burning Leicester desire. For a club mired in administrative stagnation, the return of its greatest modern warrior (devoid of the shadows cast by the current hierarchy) is the one true tonic for survival.

To see Vardy back in the blue of Leicester would be a sensational bookend to a legendary career, provided the corridors of power are finally swept clean of those who facilitated the decline. Two birds, one stone?
