Russell Martin will know that he's been chosen as Gary Rowett's successor to lift Leicester City immediately back to the Championship.

The Foxes will not want to be stuck in the third tier for any longer than one sobering season, as the lowly division can be a suffocating environment long-term for a sleeping giant.

While Martin's one promotion in the EFL - which saw Southampton head to the Premier League in 2024 - works heavily in his favour here, he will want to be backed in the transfer market with signings galore that will make his promotion aspirations easier to pull off.

There is one transfer rumour that does stand out in this regard...

Leicester eyeing move for Wrexham star

Leicester will be on the hunt for stars who know League One like the back of their hand, as the squad is scrubbed of prima donnas.

Arthur Okonkwo ticks all the boxes here, as he plied his trade in the third tier with Wrexham during the 2024/25 season, but with the Red Dragons now a Championship side who want Premier League football, a door has swung open for the 24-year-old to depart.

As per EFL-focused journalist Alan Nixon, this is where Leicester comes into the picture, with Nixon reporting that the League One newbies are very keen on striking up a deal for the ex-Arsenal youngster, whether that be on a loan basis or permanently.

Either way, Leicester would just be glad they can get their mitts on a player who knows what it takes to be a success, when promotion is expected, with Okonkwo a serial promotion expert with the Welsh outfit.

He's a serial promotion winner

Joining in League Two, the 24-year-old is an instantly recognisable face when it comes to Wrexham's whirlwind ascent up the leagues.

During his debut season, the two-time Nigeria international would slot in effortlessly to his new surroundings, with 14 clean sheets collected from 36 league games, as promotion was instantly won.

He was only getting started, looking back with hindsight on side, with his 24/25 offerings making him stand out even more as a top-class EFL stopper.

From 33 appearances in the hustle and bustle of League One, Okonkwo would only give up 23 goals, keeping 19 clean sheets along the way.

A second successive promotion would be won off the back of his heroics, with the 24-year-old constantly living up to his billing by his manager, Phil Parkinson, for being an "influential signing."

Martin will hope, if a move gets off the ground for the Wrexham number one, that his promotion-winning expertise can rub off on the entire Foxes camp, as a return to the Championship is made to look like a walk in the park, rather than an arduous struggle.

It's not as if he would be entering the ranks off the back of a poor Championship season, either, with ten clean sheets collected last campaign, as Wrexham nearly entered the playoffs for a chance at three successive promotions.

Leicester really could hit the jackpot landing Okonkwo's services, as if it's a short-term loan, he could prove vital in making their instant dreams of moing back to the second tier a reality.

If they manage to win him outright, they're set for a number one stopper who knows what it takes to be a success in the EFL's elite league, too, with Martin surely wanting to hurry through a deal for the 6-foot-6 star as soon as possible.
