Leicester decide not to hire these two potential managers
The two remaining analysed
That leaves Corberan and Nistelrooy. We have already done an in-depth dive into the ‘why’ for Ruud van Nistelrooy and offered insight into how the Dutchman would coach the team, as well as the benefits to Leicester of going all-in on the young head coach. To summarise, he adapt his system based on the opposition, develops young talent really well, and carries a great weight in respect from his legendary heritage and the coaches he once’s played under.
Carlos Corberan was linked previously as well. Unfortunately, as one who is currently employed, there would be a cost - £4m - in attempting to hire the coach instead of the other choices. However, we could say Corberan is Nistelrooy+. Let me explain briefly.
With West Bromwich Albion, the Spaniard is proving himself to be a great asset to any team. On a tight budget, but with a strong youth academy and individual stars, Corberan is consistently improving players and bringing them into a flexible attacking system which prizes possession and tidy progression.
This means we usually see a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 on attack depending on the exact makeup of the team and whether they want the forward to support defenders more, or if the midfielders are more creative and better passers, thus meaning progression can be left to an attacking midfielder. On defence, this means a 4-4-2 high-pressing low-block with compact lines and the forwards becoming a versatile line, moving into wing-back positions or pressing opposition defenders into making mistakes. The Spaniard’s system is about winning the ball and creating dangerous situations before recycling possession back again.
With Graham Potter and David Moyes out of the runnings - be that their own choice or the club’s - the Foxes must choose between two young, highly adaptable, and possession-based head coaches. Corberan offers more experience in managing English football, as well as being younger and more proven. Nistelrooy is exciting and performed well with PSV Eindhoven.
