Leicester great backs Foxes to improve ahead of relegation run-in

A certain Leicester City legend has chimed in with his thoughts about the Foxes' relegation run-in, as he predicts an improvement in form.

Time is beginning to run out for Leicester City, if they want to remain in the Championship for the 2026/27 season.

Indeed, the crisis-ridden Foxes only have seven games left of their season now to keep their heads above water, and they are currently still stuck inside the miserable bottom three spaces in the unforgiving division.

Gary Rowett has offered a calmness to proceedings, but the wins haven't been forthcoming, with the former Leicester defender, as a player, turned desperate head coach, only steering the Midlands side to a sorry one win from seven games at the helm.

That doesn't tell the full story, as Leicester have also only lost twice since Rowett took on the reins, with the Foxes definitely becoming harder to break down, even if they remain a little toothless in attempting to secure wins.

If Leicester were to sink to the depressing pits of League One, it would be the first time the former Premier League champions have resided in this lowly division since the 2008/09 season.

It was just a one-season stay that time around, as ex-Foxes great Matty Fryatt tore the league to shreds with 27 goals put away from only 46 outings.

Jamie Vardy very nearly eclipsed that total during Leicester's title-winning 2015/16 season, when he bagged a whirlwind 24 goals from 36 league encounters, but Fryatt remains a firm fan favourite at the King Power to this day, for so many memorable moments during bleak times.

Now a regular pundit and retired, the 40-year-old has chimed in with his thoughts on Leicester's dire current situation, as a gloomy return to the lower reaches of the EFL is on the cards.

Fryatt's optimistic view on Leicester's relegation run-in

There must be a part of Fryatt at the moment that wishes he could pull on Leicester blue again, as the performances in front of goal continue to be limp.

Patson Daka's penalty miss at Vicarage Road means Leicester have only scored a flat seven goals since Rowett took over, with these the sorts of numbers you'd expect from a relegation fodder outfit.

However, the fight and determination on display since Rowett has taken over has given Fryatt plenty to be encouraged by, as he said at the full-time whistle of the goalless Hornets match, when appearing on the When You're Smiling podcast.

He said: "Leicester did everything but get the ball in the back of the net. It was all about if Leicester could go and produce. They couldn't quite in the end, but it was an encouraging display.

You'd take the point but I think it's two points dropped. You have got to be taking at least one of those chances. Unfortunately Patson Daka will be having nightmares about the missed opportunities."

It was encouraging. It was one of the most assured performances we've seen since Gary Rowett arrived - it was just missing that final little bit.

If they play like that in the Easter weekend fixtures (Preston and Sheffield Wednesday) they'll get positive outcomes."

As Fryatt rightly says, Leicester did look assured and confident against the Hornets, all while agonisingly never finding the back of the net.

If they can put on similarly level-headed displays against Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday, while packing their shooting boots, those desperately needed wins might finally fall into their lap.

Fryatt certainly enjoyed his one-season stay in League One all those years ago, but he will hope this current crop doesn't fall victim to the same fate he had to put up with.
