Talks are ongoing, but Leicester City will feel confident that they're close to appointing Russell Martin.

That's what journalist Pete O'Rourke has reported on social media anyway, when it comes to the latest developments involving the ex-Southampton boss diving back into EFL management.

A pinch of salt is sometimes needed with social media updates, but it's now clear that Martin is the frontrunner, with a deal still needing to be ironed out before it can be properly announced.

It's a potential appointment that has been met with some bemusement, considering how badly the 40-year-old crashed and burn in his last high-profile job at Rangers, with only one Scottish Premiership win secured.

But, Robert Huth - who is a very respected figure at the King Power - has come out to back the Scotsman to be a success in League One.

Huth's comments on Martin's potential appointment

Huth would never fall to the third tier as a Foxes player like the disgraced camp who currently pull on the Leicester jersey.

Instead, the German battler would only line up for the Midlands giants in the Premier League, with his brute strength, and keen eye for goal during challenging times, leading the Foxes to the top-flight title in 2016.

Featuring in the Champions League a crazy eight times for his former employers, too, the 41-year-old experienced so many highs at the King Power in such a short of space of time.

He will no doubt be hurting when looking at the one-time Premier League champions in the here and now, as they are deep in the wreckage of back-to-back relegations.

For Huth, Martin would be a "sensible" appointment who should be able to guide them out of their depressing League One pit immediately.

The Berlin-born defender, who has now retired, said this when quizzed on the 40-year-old being handed the reins by Leicestershire Live: "There doesn't seem to be a standout candidate that everybody is talking about.

"Russell Martin has a history of getting teams promoted, although things have been a little up and down since then. I think he's a sensible choice."

The proof will soon be in the pudding if Martin is announced, with the out-of-work manager certainly boasting a better record managing in the EFL than out in Scotland, to back up Huth's positive assessment.

Martin could be a success

Indeed, while he would only go on to steer the Gers to a sorry five wins from 17 matches, leading to Martin becoming public enemy number one at Ibrox, he was more well-liked in the dug-outs of Southampton, Swansea City, and Milton Keynes Dons previously.

He would even guide the Saints to the Premier League in 2024, as Adam Armstrong broke the deadlock at Wembley in a tense Championship playoff final. This could stand him in good stead in the Foxes dug-out, as a lot of nervy games will be on the League One fixture schedule, as promotion will be expected.

Winning 24 third tier games in the past as manager of Milton Keynes, too, the 40-year-old has never been handed the reins in the intense division when the club he's managing is a big fish in a small pond.

That win record at Stadium MK is deemed more impressive with the context that The Dons would fall to League Two not long after his exit to Swansea.

Hopefully, if he does take on the vacancy at Leicester, he thrives again in the third tier, with Leicester fans wanting their team to stroll to promotion.

It has been a long wait for a new manager to be unveiled, but it looks as if Martin will be revealed as Gary Rowett's successor shortly, and he has received the backing of Huth, for the time being.
