Leicester City are reportedly ready to roll the dice on Newcastle United's Injury-prone defensive stalwart, Jamaal Lascelles. The East Midlands outfit are currently said to be scrambling for reinforcements in defences before the pending transfer deadline. The 32-year-old (many observers and spectators assume he's older) has become a fringe figure at St James' Park. This is primarily due to a devastating cruciate ligament injury suffered in early 2024. Subsequent muscular issues have also limited him to just a handful of cameos this season. Though quality, or a lack thereof, is the main reason you don't see much of him.

A worrying but steadying prospect

Despite these fitness concerns, the veteran apparently remains a highly-regarded 'culture setter' in the North East. To be fair, Lascelles' playing history is defined by leadership, having captained the Magpies through both Championship promotion.

Lascelles is no stranger to the Foxes, having faced them numerous times in the Premier League. His record against Leicester is a mixed bag of resilient defensive displays and the occasional heavy defeat. This reflects a career often described as 'solid but mistake-heavy'.

While he is a dominant physical presence and an exceptional aerial duelist, critics have long pointed to a lack of composure on the ball and a tendency for high-profile lapses in concentration. Mistakes and errors are not, however, a natural byproduct of his style.

Nevertheless, the rumour feels increasingly realistic given an expiring contract. Magpies boss Eddie Howe admitted that Lascelles is the only senior player likely to depart Tyneside this window. If the Derby-born man can prove his fitness, he would enter the Leicester XI. One that has failed to keep a clean sheet in months.

"After confirming Newcastle won't be recruiting before tomorrow's transfer window closes, he disclosed: "The only one that possibly could leave is Jamaal Lascelles."

The CB's hypothetical arrival on Filbert Way offers steel currently missing from the backline. Vocal leadership is required to steady a dejected roster during their slide down the Championship table. Though the Foxes fan base can definitely expect some awkward moments.
