Rowett could be forced to drop Leicester star alongside Daka

Gary Rowett might well consider dropping this Leicester City star, alongside axing a wasteful Patson Daka.

Patson Daka's debut season at Leicester City, after a major £23m move from RB Salzburg was confirmed, would have got the Foxes masses excited about what he could offer long-term.

Indeed, he would bag a blistering five goals from just six Europa League outings during the 2021-22 season, with a respectable five strikes also falling into his back pocket in the Premier League from only 13 starts.

Fast forward to the present, however, and the killer instinct the number 20 once possessed in the Europa League looks to be long gone, as he spurned a golden penalty opportunity on the road at Watford last time out.

Leicester would have to make do with a 0-0 draw in the end, as countless more chances were thrown away.

Gary Rowett must think long and hard over the international break as to whether Daka is his main leading man in attack for the rest of the season, with the Zambian international only scoring a meagre two goals, across his last ten Championship encounters.

Fluffing 11 big chances, too, in the second tier this campaign, Leicester fans packed into the King Power will have zero faith in Daka being able to put away big goals when games are resting on a knife's edge, at the very foot of the league.

Of course, Daka isn't alone here in being a wasteful forward, with Rowett's other lone striker, Jordan Ayew, not faring any better for large portions of the season, having bagged a sorry three league goals.

It's a real toss-up as to who Rowett will depend upon, but alongside Daka being possibly dropped, the under-pressure manager might be forced into also axing this underperformer, who is a shadow of his former self, much like the goal-shy number 20.

Rowett could be forced into dropping this star

The lengthy international break ahead will give Rowett plenty of food for thought about his ongoing team selections.

One surprise alteration he could be forced into making, due to a drop-off in performances, is removing Stephy Mavididi from his starting XI, as he has consistently failed to be the tricky winger he once was for the Foxes during their times of crisis.

Last campaign, he was a rare bright spark, as Leicester sank to the Championship, with a stunning four Premier League goals next to his name, from only 16 starts.

In the second tier, however, he has regressed, with only two strikes in his back pocket, this time around, from 29 league starts.

His performance at Vicarage Road was also subdued, to say the least, as he failed to strike fear into the Hornets defenders with surging darts forward.

Rather, his game was far too predictable to read and intercept, with possession also given away a high ten times, despite only accumulating 32 touches of the ball.

It could be time for the ex-Arsenal youngster to be dropped, considering he last picked up a goal contribution for the relegation-threatened side in the FA Cup against League Two opposition Cheltenham Town, back in January.

Since then, his performances have looked a tad disinterested, with Rowett all too aware of the clock ticking on his lowly side's season.

To try and save the grim situation, the 52-year-old might have to axe the likes of Daka and Mavididi, with the starting XI that takes to the field against Preston North End on Good Friday, anyone's guess.
