A gruelling preseason of endurance running and tactical work gave way to a promising set of friendly fixtures followed by an EFL Cup win. Yet when the League One campaign kicked off followed, early stagnation hit Russell Martin's side hard.

Possession without penetration, slow build‑up and a worrying lack of cutting edge left the Foxes with just one point from their opening two league games and an early cup exit. This exposed the gulf between the gaffer's ideal and reality.

The summer transfer window has seen a complete overhaul of the squad, with ten new faces arriving and several key departures. However, at least on paper, the former Scotland international still has a group capable of mounting a serious promotion challenge.

What remains clear, is that signing a clinical striker, or the rapid development of new signing Admir Bristric, is essential to convert dominance into the goals their play deserves. Of all the recent additions, though, it is the 10th and final arrival who may well prove the most significant - 19‑year‑old Finnish centre‑back Ilari Kangasniemi.

A glowing Leicester City appraisal

The centre back stands at six foot six, and brings with him the pedigree of a 12‑month spell in Inter Milan's youth academy before returning to impress for FC Inter Turku in Finland's top flight and European competition. His signing prompted widely respected talent scout Jacek Kulig to declare the transfer 'an exciting one' for the East Midlands team.

Kangasniemi is described as an exceptionally composed and technically polished defender with some amazing physical tools. He is 'definitely a player to keep an eye on'. Kulig goes so far to insist on Premier League potential here!

That kind of praise from a trusted voice offers a tantalising glimpse of what could be; if Kangasniemi can live up to that billing, he may well become the cornerstone of this new Leicester defence. In a time of frustration as well as transition in Leicestershire, it is the young CB who might just be the piece that ties Martin's puzzle together.
