Leicester City considering a move for Chris Smalling
Leicester City are considering a move for Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, as per an exclusive report by The Sun.
The Foxes are looking to bring in defensive reinforcements, having lost two of their three Premier League games so far. They twice threw away their lead against Arsenal to lose 4-3 on the opening day, and while they have looked better at the back since, they are in need of at least one recognised centre-back to partner Harry Maguire.
Leicester have already had a £21 million bid rejected for West Bromwich Albion’s Jonny Evans, and with Manchester City still in pole position to sign the 29-year old, they might have to look elsewhere.
One of the players they are targeting is Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, who has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford since the big money arrivals of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof. Although Lindelof is yet to feature in a Premier League game this season, Jose Mourinho has still preferred Phil Jones as his other centre-back alongside Bailly, with Smalling warming the bench.

The 27-year old is still a crucial part of Gareth Southgate’s England plans, but if he continues to be benched, he may well fall down the pecking order with the national team as well, further damaging his World Cup 2019 hopes.
Leicester City are yet to make an offer for Smalling, but as the Deadline Day approaches, a bid may be tabled soon. Craig Shakespeare has already stated his intentions to sign a centre-back, and Smalling might be the perfect fit.
