Leicester City are reportedly interested in signing out of favour George Hirst from Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

The 18-year-old has seen his chances of first team football limited due to fellow strikers Jordan Rhodes, Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher and Fernando Forestieri all keeping the young starlet out.

Hirst is yet to feature for the Owls this term and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, a move looks more than possible.

The Foxes face tough opposition from Bristol City and Leeds United for Hirst’s signature and he has already been tipped as one of England’s most exciting prospects, having represented the Lions from the under 17s through to the under 20s.

Former City boss Craig Shakespeare had a £2 million bid rejected last summer but newly appointed Claude Puel shares the same ambition to bringing the striker in.

Last season he scored 40 goals across all age levels and continues to be heavily involved with the England youth squads. He converted four goals in the under 20 tournament in Toulon last June as well as being named in the tournament’s Team of the Year.

The teenager quickly followed the feat with a hat-trick for the under 19s against Poland in September and is named in the squad for their European qualifiers against the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Bulgaria.

Having made his Sheffield Wednesday debut debut as a substitute in a Carabao Cup tie at Cambridge United last season, the son of former England international David Hirst has seen his career stagnate.

Following the reports that Islam Slimani is parting ways with the club, the transfer could well suit Puel and his team.
