Leicester City manager Claude Puel has asked Marc Albrighton to do more if he wants to get into Gareth Southgate’s England.

The 28-year old wasn’t named in the Three Lions’s squad to face Netherlands and Italy, and he hence gave up on his hopes of ever representing his nation.

Claude Puel, however, is still adamant about Albrighton’s chances of playing on the international stage, who he thinks has improved a lot and is continuing to do so.

Praising the fabled Foxes midfielder, Puel said:

"“I cannot take the place of Gareth (Southgate) as manager but Albrighton has given his best for Leicester.“The important thing is he has continued to improve. He has become a more complete player – for example, he has given more options in his play.“Often his only thought was to come inside and provide a cross but he has good feet and he can give other options in his play.“In training, he has worked on other possibilities to attack and I think it’s a good thing and a good evolution.“I hope in the future he can become an international player because he has all the good attributes.“But I think he needs more options in his play and he is working to achieve this. We will see if he is successful at the end of the season, for the World Cup.“For the future, I think he has to improve and be on his game for Leicester – then he will have all possibilities.”"

Marc Albrighton has every right to feel hard done by the England managers of the past and present. The Leicester City man has been right up there with anyone who is currently playing for England and has even outperformed some of the names in the current squad.

The former Aston Villa man has scored two goals and assisted seven this Premier league campaign, the second highest by an Englishman, while his tally of 20 assists in the last three seasons is the third highest by an Englishman in the league, with only Chelsea’s Ross Barkley and Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli ahead of him.

To be overlooked again, therefore, is really hard to digest, and it is totally understandable when he says that he is not concerned about an England call-up anymore. Maybe, there is still scope for him to make it to Russia for the FIFA World Cup 2018 if he does keep on performing at this level for Leicester City, and someone else in Gareth Southgate’s squad doesn’t.
