Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel “is in the top three” in the world, as per Denmark manager Age Hareide.

Schmeichel was arguably the best player on show for Denmark at the FIFA World Cup, keeping clean sheets against Peru and France before producing the display of his life against Croatia.

His side may have eventually lost the penalty shoot-out (3-2) that night, but it won’t have got to that stage had the Leicester City shot-stopper not denied Luka Modric deep into extra time. He later made a couple more saves in the shoot-out.

It’s no surprise that Age Hareide was more than impressed. Speaking to Danish newspaper BT, he said:

"“He is in the top three,” he said.“He was perhaps the best goalkeeper at the World Cup. He has also shown earlier, especially in that season when Leicester won the Premier League, that he is at the top. So I want to say that Kasper is in the top three.“Kasper’s attitude is getting better every single time. That’s why he gets better and better. I think he could be even better. He has also gained a lot of experience gradually and he always works hard.”"

Messrs Manuel Neuer, Jan Oblak, David De Gea, Thibaut Courtois, Gianluigi Buffon and Keylor Navas might have a lot to say about that, but a majority of the Leicester City supporters would nonetheless agree with what Hareide has to say.

There really is no count of times when the 31-year old has saved the Foxes over the years, comfortably establishing himself as one of the very best to have donned a Leicester shirt. This is why those in the East Midlands are now hoping for the speculation surrounding him to go away.

Schmeichel is one of the two goalkeepers who Chelsea are looking at – Arsenal’s Petr Cech being the other – to sign as replacement for the Real Madrid-bound Thibaut Courtois. AS Roma are the other club to be linked with him, having sold Alisson Becker for a world-record £64.5 million to Liverpool.
