Reports: Harry Maguire to sign new deal
Reports claim Harry Maguire is set to sign a new contract with Leicester City. Almost doubling his current wages.
Securing Harry Maguire for another season is the most important piece of business Leicester City can conduct this summer. England’s all action centre-back was superb at the World Cup. Consequently he attracted many admirers: fans, pundits and inevitably ‘larger’ clubs than the Foxes.
Manchester United are most cited as Maguire’s admirers, per Sky Sports. A fee of around £65m was touted. These comments were, naturally, not received very positively by the Midlands club’s support. Losing the best players of a club attempting to rise is a scourge which must be broken.
Now BBC Sport‘s gossip column and the Mirror say Maguire could imminently sign an improved deal with the Foxes. Hallelujah. Relief, surely, will result all over Leicester. While Maguire is still on holiday in Barbados and not expected back as of yet.
Leicester City put their money where their mouth is
According to the Mirror, the Midlands side will offer the 25-year-old double his current wages. He has four-years remaining on his present deal. Mirror Sport also say Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United price themselves out – following a new price-tag.
"“Leicester are understandably keen to hold on to their man and United will need to spend at least £80million to land their prime defensive target. And that would appear unlikely given Jose Mourinho’s stand-off with United chief Ed Woodward over the club’s transfer business. Leicester are poised to slap a £95,000 a week new deal in front of the 25-year-old – almost doubling his current £50,000 a week wages.” – Mirror Sport"
Although there is no fee which would secure Maguire’s services for United this season. This is because both Leicester City manager and chairman stated the centre-back is not for sale. Another speculated departure concerns goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Yet, he is imperative for the squad too; owner and management share this view.
United apparently decided to move on in the search of a quality defender. Good news for the Blue Army: said to be the fresh ‘target’ at Old Trafford is Colombian Yerry Mina. Barcelona seem to want to sell the defender. Another on the Red Devils’ shopping list is Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld. Hopefully either of those transfers transpire; assisting Maguire in remaining at the King Power Stadium.
In addition, Foxes boss Claude Puel told reporters the pair should not leave: “Kasper and Maguire are so valuable for us. It is important to maintain our structure, our squad and all our valuable players for the team.”
