Wes Morgan’s imminent contract extension at Leicester City discussed
Don’t be fooled by the winning goal versus Burnley, it seems Leicester City captain Wes Morgan was already guaranteed a contract extension, according to Brendan Rodgers.
Wes Morgan’s new contract: to be or not to be, that is the question? Alright, enough with the
Craig
William Shakespeare quotes. Let’s get to fact – it appears an extension to the Jamaican’s existing deal is imminent.
After his Lancashire heroics at the weekend, it’s no surprise the 35-year-old’s getting rewarded. Stepping up bravely as usual, in the disappointing absence of England’s Harry Maguire for 87 minutes. Then getting the winner against Burnley in the dying moments of the game
Deserving?
However brilliant that instance against the Clarets was, in spite of Morgan’s committed, dedicated ways this writer along with many other Foxes supporters, pundits and observers, believe a renewal is a sentimental reward. Regardless of fine efforts seemingly bringing entitlement.
Especially for a player who makes far too many errors – often leading to conceding goals – and has the touch and vision of a poor Sunday League player. This is not an attack on the former champion and club legend, it’s the sheer want of the best for Leicester City Football Club.

Does being a ‘big character’ in the dressing room mean a thing if that professional is not on the field of play? No. It means very little in reality. A manager, his staff and the contemporary squad members should be taking care of the motivational impact themselves.
This supposed situation is comparable to the ridiculous time, a few international tournaments ago, when a long since retired David Beckham was taken with the Three Lions for the Euros. He wasn’t a player, coach or staff member in any capacity.
Did it help? Of course not, it was a complete waste of time and money. Consequently, the squad returned earlier than expected with a whimper – awaiting the entrance of Gareth Southgate in the not so distant future.
New contract for ‘big Wes’ at Leicester City
Telegraph informs us that Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers admitted recently that a one-year fresh option for the skipper will certainly be on offered:
"“I’ve spoken to the club and I would like him to get a year. As long as he can respect and understand where he is in the team and what the role is, I would love to have him here.“He is ready if needed. Of course he understands the position he is in – that he won’t start every game. But he will have a part to play, even if it’s not starting.”"
In all fairness to young Leicester centre-backs like Caglar Soyuncu and the sure-to-be returning from Celtic Filip Benkovic, the extension seems unnecessary to their hopeful development. Two massively rated young internationals – the former a senior national player with Turkey.
Maybe the fact the former Nottingham Forest man will be there to school the duo is prevalent in Rodgers’ mind. Generally this is not something other, more successful club’s like the big-six do. A coaching role for Morgan is more appropriate next season. There’s obviously two others infront too: Jonny Evans and Maguire.
The big man and leader at the back will chip in with an important goal here and there, as well as consistently putting his body on the line. Nevertheless he will still provide mistake upon mistake. Is Rodgers correct in his assessment? (At the time of publication Morgan had not signed, the deal is now signed and sealed).
