Brendan Rodgers has a ‘good dilemma’ ahead at Leicester City
Leicester City are flying since the appointment of Brendan Rodgers with four wins in five games. He now has a good dilemma on his hands in the squad.
There are four quality, in form central defenders at Leicester City at the moment: Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Wes Morgan and now Caglar Soyuncu. This will undoubtedly cause Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers a selection problem. Although it is positively one of those ‘good dilemmas’.
Morgan is fully reinvigorated as starting goalscoring captain since Maguire’s one-match suspension. However, Rodgers has stated recently that Morgan won’t be playing every game, and that he is a more than capable backup for the position. Read more on that assessment at Leicester Mercury.
Evans produced fairly consistently excellent displays before his recent hip injury which cost him his place versus Huddersfield Town. Maguire is not at the top of his game and his daughter has just been born but he’ll probably return for selection against Newcastle United on Friday after missing two contests.
With Maguire’s standing as an England first choice, as well as a World Cup semifinalist, it’s extremely likely he’ll regain a starting XI role. Although Maguire probably shouldn’t walk back in with Morgan playing so well, though the Englishman is the highest quality defender at the East Midlands club.
In fact the Jamaican has played nearly every minute of three of the four victories in five outings total. Leicester City’s record since Brendan Rodgers arrival is great in terms of conceding too: three goals let in from four successive matches.
While Soyuncu has inadvertently thrown a proverbial spanner into the works by coming in as replacement and Morgan’s partner for the win versus Huddersfield and playing a absolute blinder.
Turkey’s starlet performed wonderfully on the day, scoring this statistical tally: seven clearances, four interceptions and a 90% pass completion rate. In addition to winning five aerial duels, along with having the most touches for any outfield player.
Possible system change for Leicester City
Is three centre-backs a viable option for Rodgers at City? Yes, of course. Yet the only time the Northern Irishman boss used it was during the loss at Watford’s Vicarage Road in his initial game in charge. Leading us to believe the likelihood of that formation being reintroduced is not very high.
Following triumphing in this many consecutive clashes whist employing four defenders means it is especially favourable for Rodgers. The 4-1-4-1 is so versatile, whether defending or attacking for in-game interchanging, so expect that particular layout to continue.

In conclusion, Foxes of Leicester speculate that Soyuncu will partner Maguire at home to Newcastle if the Three Lions man is back in contention. The 22-year-old needs a few tries to be assessed correctly, now is as good a scenario as any with not too much to lose for the Foxes, and a brilliant display behind him. In spite of Soyuncu’s sloppy slip and contentious foul for Aaron Mooy’s penalty.
Morgan has been specified as an understudy after all; not to mention his heroic efforts in front of goal dying down. While we don’t know the full extent of Evans’ issue so can’t estimate his return but if available he will plausibly outrank his Turkish colleague.
These positive problems like amazing depth and a sequence of impressive wins are obviously a good omen for the ambition of finishing in seventh spot this campaign, and ultimately breaking into the illusive top-six next.
