With an impressive ten goals in his last nine games, Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has clawed his way into the race for this season’s Premier League golden boot.

After notching an emphatic brace against Arsenal in Leicester City’s latest outing, Vardy took his tally to an impressive 18 for the 2018/19 campaign.

With two games remaining this term, he has the opportunity to register a third season with 20 or more goals. A staggering feat, when you consider that he was plying his trade in the Conference Premier just seven short years ago.

The current front-runner for the top scorer prize in England’s elite division is the holder, Mo Salah, with a total of 21 goals so far. Close behind the Egyptian, with a tally of 20, is Manchester City’s record goalscorer, Sergio Aguero.

However, with two pivotal game weeks remaining to decide the title, it is likely that these talismanic players will add to their goal tallies, as they bid to secure the Premier League trophy for their respective teams.

Despite the unlikelihood of this happening, if both Aguero and Salah were to both draw blanks between now and the end of the season, Vardy would need a further three goals to tie the golden boot, and a fourth to win it outright.

The Foxes have an extremely difficult pair of fixtures to finish. First, they travel to the Etihad Stadium, before hosting a Chelsea side hunting for a Champions League spot.  Usually, a striker would not be expected to score at all in games such as these. However, Vardy now has 31 goals against top six sides, underlining his proficiency at upsetting England’s elite sides on a regular basis.

City boss, Brendan Rodgers, has been integral to Vardy’s resurgence. He had this to say about the 32-year-old:

"“It’s nice he can be close to it, because that’s important. But there is no doubt he will score many more goals.“His hunger and his desire to succeed is there, which is important. And with the team becoming more aggressive in how we play will bring him more opportunities hopefully.“He is one of the top strikers in this division and I’m very fortunate to have that type of player in the attack.“It’s not just the goals, he’s a very clever footballer. Since I’ve come in his tactical intelligence is at a very high level.”Via The Telegraph"

Sky still the limit for Leicester City’s Vardy?

The Sheffield-born striker has now reached 80 Premier League goals in his extraordinary career with Leicester. Vardy can certainly set his sights on joining the illustrious Premier League 100-club.

With Harry Kane potentially injured for the Nations League finals, no other English striker comes close to Vardy in terms of form. Should he have a place in the squad? Although Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate says he is looking forward, with regard to young promising players, and won’t go back.

More from Foxes of Leicester

Another key stumbling block to this would be the fact that Vardy’s age does not suit Southgate’s usual selection policy. Also, it was the Foxes striker who made the decision to retire. He may not have wanted to come back, even if he is asked to.

Fun fact:

The last time the golden boot winner also won the Premier League title was Robin Van Persie for Manchester United, back in 2012-13.
