Mike Phelan key to Manchester United’s hopes of landing Harry Maguire
Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan could be key to the club’s hopes of landing Harry Maguire from Leicester City, reports the Daily Star.
While the Red Devils are willing to pay around £90 million and wages in the region of £250,000 a week, the fact that Maguire wants to work with Phelan could eventually make the difference.
For those of you who have forgotten, Maguire made his breakthrough in the top flight when Phelan was in charge of Hull City.
We all know how quickly has the centre-back risen to prominence since, so much so that even Sir Alex Ferguson wants him at the club.
United have already had a £70 million bid rejected by Leicester last week, but Fergie is surprised as to why did the club not make an offer earlier in the summer, given how tough it can be to close a deal the more you delay it.
The former United boss saw Maguire in action for the first time about eight years back in the FA Youth Cup final as Sheffield United lost 4-1 to the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
The legendary manager is also believed to have offered the England international some valuable piece of advice at the time since he did spot his potential. Ferguson never gets it wrong, does he?
If he has made his opinion known to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – which he may have – then it is likely that United are indeed going to come back with a bigger and better offer – one that Leicester melt at the sight of.
