Following being sent home from his previous England squad involvement, Leicester City player James Maddison unwisely went to a casino. What happened next?

For Leicester City James Maddison has been exceptional again this season. Things are not going as well in search of a national debut. However, he may not be his own worse enemy when it comes to his delayed England career: that honour goes to Chelsea’s Mason Mount.

Both know each other well from domestic and youth international football. Neither has performed better than the other; the pair have been separately brilliant in the Premier League. Though, one suits the approach and style of Southgate more than the other. Mount is focused and appears to be somewhat of a retiring conformist, with all due respect. Whereas “Madders” has a slightly undeserving wild reputation.

Under an England manager like Gareth Southgate, there is no room for misinterpretation or bad behaviour. It’s that simple. All in all Maddison actually seems a lovely lad: a committed young pro and someone who champions great cases like that of Super Strong Sophie.

Stepping up from Leicester City to England

On the field, Southgate will no doubt have absolute faith in Maddison’s quality and proficiency. Off it is a different matter, in the Three Lions gaffer’s opinion. The Foxes No.10 was pictured in a casino 24 hours after being sent home from participation in the England camp due to illness.

While Southgate, rightly, said the midfielder could do whatever he wanted whilst on free time – it was unwise with regards to press scrutiny and public criticism. In fact, the boss wasn’t impressed either, you can tell. Especially as he’s a fairly strict yet approachable teacher type.

More from Foxes of Leicester

This is what the England chief said about the former-Norwich player’s future hopes of making a debut, after being named in the latest squad this week:

"“He’s only been in two squads. He had to go home ill last time. We sent him home. It wasn’t right for him to travel with the rest of the group.“So any suggestion he chose to go home because he wanted to go out is unfair. It’s not a great decision he took (to visit a casino).“As an England player you have a different profile. Everyone has a camera-phone and knows they can make money selling pictures.“We are supporting him because we picked him. He has to fight for a place like everyone else.”– Gareth SouthgateVia: Leicester Mercury"
