Former Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer explains how Manchester City defeated Leicester City, by using practical intelligence.

Well, this incredible run without a loss in the Premier League had to come to an end sometime for Leicester City. Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium is not an embarrassing place to be beaten, at all.

Though Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers and his players certainly didn’t give the best showing of their talents in the 3-1 loss. Once again, his match plan, nor the effort and determination of the side can be questioned.

However, the Leicester team seemed slightly overawed by the occasion of playing the champions at their own game, whilst above them in the division. Additionally, the Foxes appeared to show too much respect to the opposition – that was the East Midlanders’ biggest mistake.

How Leicester City lost and Man City won

Within the contest were more aspects of interest, with one XI seeming to have superior confidence in their ability. Man City approached the clash like a derby; they tellingly recently lost to rivals Manchester United.

Meanwhile some of the Leicester players, the midfield in particular, didn’t appear to want the ball from the defence to play neat interchanges through the pitch. If Rodgers wants to fully enforce his ‘playing out from the back system’, then this noticeable issue must be addressed.

Although, for all the things that the King Power club may do things differently next time out versus elite opponents, Pep Guardiola’s team were excellent. Predictably, ex-Fox Riyad Mahrez played well, giving Ben Chilwell a multitude of problems.

Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer illuminated on how the Citizens gave such a stunning attacking display:

"“It was so clever in what Pep did and what Kevin De Bruyne did.“Their intelligence was superb because De Bruyne created space for (Riyad) Mahrez.“Ben Chilwell has to be tight to his centre-half, which he is, and you can see De Bruyne pointing to pass to Mahrez.“That switch of play was on the vast majority of the time because of De Bruyne’s positioning, trying to get into the pockets and making it very difficult for Chilwell.”– Alan ShearerVia: Leicester Mercury"
