Leicester make offer for Lille’s Jonathan Ikone
By James Bishop
Leicester City have reportedly made an offer for Lille’s attacking midfielder Jonathan Ikone, however, there is competition from Inter Milan, according reports.
The rumour concerning Leicester City started during a match between Lille and Rennes, with the Frenchman previously being linked with Borussia Dortmund as a replacement for Jadon Sancho if he ever left the German giants.
Lille have said that they are unsure about selling the 22-year-old and have already slapped on a £40 million price tag.
The French International scored 3 goals and registered 6 assists in 28 appearances last season having joined Lillie from PSG for £4.6m in 2018.
Ikone can play right or left wing but is predominantly an attacking midfielder, so with that in mind, would it be good business for the Foxes? My first impression is, no.
Signing a young attacking midfielder when Leicester already have one best in the Premier League in James Maddison seems very unnecessary.
The fact that Ikone can play on the wing seems very Perez-esque. Signing a very good player but then playing him out of position to make do is setting yourself back, when an out and out winger is exactly what Brendan Rodgers needs.
The likelihood of this transfer is very slim, the rumour appeared out of nowhere and with Leicester needing a left back it doesn’t really seem plausible.
Furthermore, 9 goals and assists isn’t exactly eye-catching form; it will also bring unnecessary competition to a position that already has two established players in it. In my opinion, it is not what Rodgers needs right now.
