Finally the deal which will enable Leicester City to spend is going through, as Ben Chilwell prepares to join Chelsea permanently.

We’ve all been waiting, not patiently, but intently for this one. Ben Chilwell is, it seems, finally on the verge of getting his much talked about transfer away from Leicester City.

It’s been a long summer – although the rumours of Chelsea’s ‘firm interest’ in the defender began way earlier – of expectation, stress and speculation around the Foxes. Those feelings were shared by their loyal Blue Army fan base, who value Chilwell, yet have come to terms with his impending exit from Filbert Way.

The reasons why supporters have grown to accept the move are simple: firstly the left-back gave an underwhelming overall display for almost the entirety of the 2019/20 season; not to mention doing certain things like laughing with Chelsea players after a Leicester loss to the Blues.

That incident – though probably only a joke between England team-mates – irked the faithful very much. It was an ill-advised moment by the underperforming but highly-rated player.

In addition to those elements, the King Power side apparently only has a comparatively tiny fund for signings in relation to other rival teams’ kitties. When Chilwell is eventually sold, hopefully the fee will be added to Brendan Rodgers’ armoury.

Now the respected Midlands football journalist, John Percy, says Frank Lampard is about to get his target for £50 million. Leicester had demanded up to £80m for their asset, but the promise of add-ons seems to have secured the 23 year old’s services.
