Why Chilwell sale will see domino effect at Leicester
Ben Chilwell’s move to Chelsea looks set to be signed, sealed and announced this week which could see a domino effect ripple around Leicester City.
It is reported that Frank Lampard’s side will pay £50m for the services of Ben Chilwell of Leicester City. Which improves on their current options of Marcus Alonso and Emerson.
With the contract announcements of Nampalys Mendy and James Maddison on Monday evening, the sale of Chilwell could see the start of incomings at the club in the coming weeks. The transfer window doesn’t shut until 5 October, giving Brendan Rodgers over a month to recruit required players.
Chilwell’s likely departure means the Foxes will have to replace him – unless they surprisingly trust talented youngster Luke Thomas – with Nicolas Tagliafico‘s name seemingly mentioned more than others.
The Ajax man is 27-years-old and has playing for the Dutch champions since January 2018, playing an important role in their UEFA Champions League run in 2018/19.
My view on this is that the club is holding fire on signing new players until the fee for Chilwell is received to stay within the Financial Fair Play regulations. This would mean that 50% of the Chilwell transfer fee will be spent on his replacement.
This would mean £25m left over for Rodgers to improve his squad. If the club do continue to run with spending money they bring in, the possible sales of Islam Slimani and Adrien Silva could assist in new recruitments.
Elsewhere, if the club decides to splash the cash to ensure the squad depth is improved for next season, there could be around three or four new faces at the club before their opening weekend fixture with West Bromwich Albion.
