Leicester’s Wesley Fofana may be best EPL summer signing
Is Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana the best incoming transfer of the entire Premier League in summer 2020? Here is why we think he might be.
Recruitment is always a tricky business, whether in football or any other type of industry. Bearing this in mind, it’s easy to see why media outlets, pundits, fans and any general observers praise the track record of Leicester City: the Foxes buy cheap and sell high in recent years, consequently success occurred on and off the pitch.
Finding the right player to fit a club and preexisting squad or starting line-up can, ironically, be even more difficult for the richer teams. I’ll use Manchester United’s struggles to regain their prowess of ten years ago, while buying any and all comers in the process to illuminate my point.
N’golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel, Ricardo Pereira and Jonny Evans are diverse examples of the incredible scouting and, in some cases, swooping at perfect times to secure inexpensive but supremely talented players. Then some can be sold for extortionate profits, only if they truly want to leave.
Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana is season’s best signing
The latest in the procession of amazing arrivals on Filbert Way, is French centre-back Wesley Fofana. Two weeks ago, I wrote that he may be the perfect new team member; I now consider him potentially the EPL’s top signing from summer 2020.
Don’t worry, I’ll explain my reasons and compare the Fox to a few other premium purchases.
When making comparisons with the other best EPL signings – like Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, Allan of Everton, Timo Werner who is now at Chelsea, and the return of Gareth Bale at Tottenham Hotspur – there are factors to consider. For example their age, price, form, temperament and how they have initially settled into life at a new club or different country all affects Foxes of Leicester’s choice.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Thiago Alcantara and the Toffees obtaining James Rodriguez are the only two switches that I believe rival aspects of the Fofana deal. Along with how good of a prospect the Frenchman is at the tender age of 19.
Fofana’s performances in his first few Leicester appearances highlighted his qualities as not being latent. No, he is prepared and ready to fill the void left by an injured Caglar Soyuncu. Did you see Fofana against Arsenal?! The hefty pricetag was certainly being justified.
Now, Alcantara only cost the Reds an apparent £20 million – a real bargain for one of the best defensive midfielders in world football. However, he is more than 10 years older than Fofana. Rodriguez is also now 29. While he is a quite brilliant addition to Carlo Ancelotti’s roster, he may only be there for a couple of seasons, as may the manager. Because he was said to be free, the Colombian may eventually be thought of as the most notable signing overall. Although, it is all subjective.
If he stays with the Foxes, Fofana has the skill set as well as mentality to be at King power Stadium for up to 15 years. A future captain, as FoL sees it. Yet that probably won’t happen: he’ll most likely be at Real Madrid or Manchester City in a few seasons! A 2022 World Cup winner with France? Remember, even Virgil Van Dijk started his EPL career at Southampton. Actually, if Bale wins the league for Spurs – forget everything I’ve just written.
