Leicester City knew they had a gem in Belgium star Youri Tielemans, that’s why £40 million seemed like a good deal. The midfielder can become the future Foxes captain.

The short answer to the question, can Youri Tielemans become a Foxes captain in the future? – is yes. OK, thanks for reading, that’s it. I’m only joking, let’s look at the reasons why he’s so good and a potential leader.

I’ll be absolutely honest with you, first of all, I felt Tielemans had not been his usual self since part of 2019/20 up until a couple of months ago. One aspect I wondered about or criticised the 23-year-old for, was a lack of physical toughness as well as bravery in the tackle.

However, having addressed or refined that part of his game, transitioning to a general in the middle – Tielemans has now become a complete midfielder. Not many of those exist – not even in the Premier League!

Leicester City star could be future captain

A willingness to challenge, and do so successfully, has added another fan base to Tielemans‘ champions – the defensive-midfielders. Obviously he already had the visionary eye for a pass and the killer instinct to finish a move off, but a combative element playing alongside incredible talent Wilfred Ndidi has taken the Belgian to a higher echelon. A pedestal Tielemans’ skill set deserves to sit atop.

Furthermore, Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers previously expressed his on-field trust for his player: the Northern Irishman is content to relay instructions through Tielemans as an in-game conduit. Lastly, Foxes of Leicester also noticed the latter giving encouragement and advice to team-mates during the 90 minutes.

Evidently Tielemans is already performing much of the workload of a skipper, not to mention aiding Rodgers’ steering of the ship. The next promotion is only a matter of time; an outfield leader is preferable to a goalkeeper anyway, no disrespect to Kasper Schmeichel.
