How much Leicester City can earn from Champions League qualification
By Akash Roy
Leicester City is on the verge of securing a qualification spot for the Champions League this year. Such an achievement guarantees to secure valuable funds.
The Foxes have previously qualified to play in the tantalizing Champions League as one of the virtues of winning the 2015/16 Premier League season. For a second time in the club’s recent history, the Blue Army might just be tracing another UCL journey in the 2021/22 season.
With only five games remaining in the domestic league this season, City expects to wrap things early by securing a top-four finish to partake their shares on those dangling UCL spots.
Guaranteed funds on qualification
The King Power club can bank a minimum of £40 million on qualifying for Champions League. With the promise of further funds if they progress to the knockout stages. Such an amount could be a boost to the club’s spending power. It can help them to make some decisive moves for their potential transfer targets.
Not only that, with a guaranteed spot, the club could embark on a remarkable journey by becoming a dream destination for many upcoming starlets around the globe, who can feel mesmerized by the charisma of UCL.
The need for Leicester City
Leicester City needs a few players that can be of paramount importance. They can play in four premier competitions next season, so attaining a solid squad depth is just an understatement. The King Power club is desperately in search of another striker who can take the load off Iheanacho & Vardy.
Celtic’s Edouard is under the prime spotlight and will cost about £20m. If the Foxes fail to acquire him, Ivan Toney will remain as a backup target. Alongside that, the East Midland club is also interested in the Atalanta midfielder Robin Gosens for the LB role. In the midfield department, a young playmaker amongst Soumare, Faivre, or Trincão is under serious consideration.
The total signing spree could cost the club around £60m-£70m to get a solid squad for the next season. Contract extensions for City’s key players should also cost a few good millions. The guarantee of the fund sure looks to act in a positive way for the club’s future.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to do well in the remaining games of the season to avoid any sort of complacency like last time. Here’s what he said before facing Southampton tonight-
"“There’s been no real shift from a tactical perspective: there’s that automated feeling that when you’re away from home you’ve got to be really strong, resilient and aggressive, you’ve also got to be clinical and I think the players have shown that in a lot of the games. Hopefully we can take the same mentality into Friday’s game. When you travel away, the home teams aren’t necessarily under pressure to attack so much because there’s no crowds. Until this point this season has been really good, but it’s not the time to soften up. The win puts us level with last season but our ambition is to finish as high as we can and with a trophy. That’s our focus.”– Brendan Rodgers via The Telegraph."
With London clubs Chelsea and West Ham lurking behind, the Foxes would love nothing more than to secure maximum points possible from the next two fixtures to breathe a sigh of relief.
