Youri Tielemans talks Leicester, winning FA Cup and that goal
By Akash Roy
Youri Tielemans became a living legend of Leicester City when he scored that thunderous strike against Chelsea in the FA Cup final. How does he perceive it?
The young Belgian midfielder has established himself as a bonafide top-drawer in the Premier League. It was his shot that ended the drought for the Foxes. The East Midlands side was never able to win any of the FA Cup finals despite reaching them for a record number of four times. The “special” 25-yard strike poured emotions out of every City fan, who had to wait for ages before witnessing the prestigious glimmer of that anticipated silverware.
Despite the speculations over his contract talks and near future, one thing Youri will always live on in infamy, as this goal that made him a chapter of Leicester City’s history forever. The 24-year-old has bagged club’s supporters’ player and players’ player of the year awards for his splendid contributions this season.
Currently, Tielemans is an integral part of the Belgian squad, which is playing their friendlies before UEFA Euro 2020 begins. He will be hoping to reach similar heights individually with his country this summer. As the number-one ranked nation, Belgium is among the favorites to win the competition. Looking back at the season during an interview with the Belgian TV, Youri reminisced about his historical moment. Here’s what he had to say:-
"“You don’t realize it (how historic the goal was) in the moment, I’m just happy for myself first and then for the team-mates and for the club. In retrospect, when you get a lot of messages, then you realize this was one for the history books. I try to stay very calm about that. Sometimes when you hit that ball, you just feel it and you know, okay, it’s in. Or at least very well placed. And then it’s up to the goalkeeper.”– Youri Tielemans, via Leicester Mercury"
Last night Tielemans was outright brilliant with his performance against Croatia. He was the best play-maker on the field for Belgium, he even had to step up to the occasion as Kevin De Bruyne still remained out of yesterday’s line-up.
