Sharky, Mr. Reliable. Whatever you choose to call Marc Albrighton, one thing is clear after 2020/2021, he will go down as a Leicester City legend.

Marc Albrighton, Leicester City statistics

Appearances total: – 42/ Premier League –31 / FA Cup – 5 / Europa League – 5 / EFL Cup – 1

Goals total: – 2

Moment to savour: – Lifting his second trophy

Moment to forget: – ??????? Nope, nothing.

Those late to the Leicester supporter ranks might still not get what exactly it is about Marc Albrighton that keeps his light burning so brightly at the club. In their desire for wingers that beat players and curl shots in from 25 yards, they miss the function of top of their game professionals that hit the stats marks every time.

Last season Albrighton amassed an impressive seven assists, with five of them in the Premier League, the same amount as Phil Foden and Mason Mount. Clearly, Mr. Albrighton is a different player from his younger English counterparts, but it does go to serve a point, that getting the job done shouldn’t be dismissed against fancy skills.

He waited patiently as always and his first starting spot soon came away at Leeds in a comprehensive win where he served expertly as a right-wingback. Albrighton’s inclusion is usually an indication of Brendan Rodgers wanting to ensure there is enough defensive protection down the flanks, with his positional sense normally excellent meaning he is able to sniff out danger in quick time.

His skill at picking out passes shouldn’t be overlooked either, watch his back post assist for Jamie Vardy’s equaliser in the thrilling 3-3 draw at Braga. But he continues to be a sound selection throughout the season for whenever Rodgers needs a player to carry out his orders to the letter.

The only improvement he constantly needs to make to his game is the level of goalscoring. In early January he ended his 2-year goal drought with a neatly taken strike at Stoke in the FA cup.

Later on, in the season, he followed it up with a classy finish in the Newcastle United debacle. Most importantly he was entrusted by Brendan Rodgers to come on at Wembley when Jonny Evans sustained his first-half injury and he needed to reshuffle the pack.

Keeping the game tight was what Rodgers would have wanted and Albrighton is adept at ensuring the team keeps its shape. He would go on to lift his second trophy with the club in another fruitful season. Now he has signed a contract till 2024 taking him up to his 34th birthday, perhaps he can make it a hat trick of trophies as a Leicester player.
