Crystal Palace 2-2 Leicester City: 3 Things we noticed
By Akash Roy
Fortune switched sides against Leicester City once again as they slipped up a two-goal lead against Crystal Palace that concluded with both sides sharing a point each.
Patrick Vieira’s Eagles had a strong start against Brendan Rodgers’ men until the first thirty minutes. The game opened up when Kelechi Iheanacho stole the ball from Joachim Andersen’s control and swiftly executed an exquisitely composed finish to put Leicester City into the lead.
Jamie Vardy doubled the lead when Harvey Barnes played a clever pass to the Foxes’ frontman at the left for him to control the ball magnificently and convert it into the near post out of Vincente Guaita’s reach.
Palace being the better side, struggled to display their efforts in the scoreline. Vieira brought in some inspired substitutions in the second half that changed the game’s momentum. The young 19-year-old Michael Olise and former Leicester City player Jeffrey Schlupp came off the bench to score and make the scoreline two apiece.
Leicester City’s 3 Talking points
Line-up was better – Compared to the starting line-up put forward by the manager, this one was better than its predecessor. However, the inclusion of Hamza Choudhury over Boubakary Soumaré surprised plenty of fans. Their concerning thoughts proved to be accurate as Choudhury struggled visibly by misplacing his passes and having an overall poor read of the game. He was unable to deal with threats as a CDM, due to which Palace made some dangerous forward runs. On more than one occasion, Timothy Castagne bailed Choudhury out of rough spots, covering for him in nullifying his errors.
4-4-2 – Brendan Rodgers finally gave way to test out the reliable formation of 4-4-2. With that in place, Leicester City players found more options in orchestrating counter-attacks whenever the opportunity arose. The birthday boy Iheanacho found more freedom to operate on a number 10 role. He not only scored but was able to be of vital importance aiding in the side’s counter-attacking press.
Underwhelming aspect – The unreliable defense was again the prime source of remorse for the East Midlanders as they gave two avoidable goals away. Unable to deal with the threats in the box, City dropped two points again. Jannik Vestergaard and Çağlar Söyüncü’s defensive woes prove that the backline is out of its depth as neither of them shares any compatibility with one another.
