Brendan Rodgers explains if Leicester will sign new players in January
Brendan Rodgers has spoken about Leicester City’s January transfer window. His words might be displeasing to supporters. Here is what he has said.
The Foxes sit eighth with 22 points, three behind rivals Tottenham Hotspurs who have played two less games due to COVID-19 outbreaks amongst their playing and backroom staff. The team has both scored and conceded the fifth most goals in the Premier League.
In this context, Leicester supporters are crying out for the return of injured players, new signings in January, new ideas, and better defending from set pieces. If reports are to be believed, then the King Power side are interested in defenders.
After a rather busy summer transfer window last time out, with Patson Daka, Ademola Lookman, Ryan Bertrand, Jannik Vestergaard, and Boubakary Soumare all joining. Rodgers’ team possibly need more reinforcements to correct their current form.
Leicester City boss responds
Leicester have at various times been linked to Stefan de Vrij, James Tarkowski, Chris Richards, and also Pontus Jansson. Several centre-backs to try and replace the now fragile – but still critical – Jonny Evans.
From LeicestershireLive, the Northern Irish gaffer has stated what he believes to be the transfer situation ahead of the upcoming window.
"“To be fair I’m not sure we have the funds to do that to be honest… It’s one where you just have to make do with what you have”"
Unless there are any outgoings, the existing cashflow is not enough to make any major acquisitions. This does not mean the Foxes could not go in for someone on loan, though it is unlikely in the January window that a team would send any decent players out on loan.
This could also be understood as a way of making Leicester seem less desperate before attempting to sign players. I would expect Papy Mendy to be leaving the side, so there might be some funds available for a cheap but experienced option.
With Wesley Fofana still a while away and Vestergaard not yet integrated or adapted, it is time to get a replacement for Evans that can truly support the team and is not going to be injured every four weeks.
