Rodgers on possible Leicester vs Tottenham postponement chances
By Nathan Wong
Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur have both had weeks disrupted by COVID-19 with the latter side having two games postponed due to this. Whilst the Foxes had seven missing through COVID and illness, this didn’t stop them from recording a 4-0 win over Newcastle.
At the current point in time, there are conflicting reports about whether the game will go ahead. Sky Sports reported on Sunday that Tottenham reopened their training ground, providing hope the fixture will be fulfilled.
Unfortunately, the Leicester Mercury this morning have reported that Spurs have registered another positive 1st team case as well as an outbreak in the Under 23’s. This throws the outcome into confusion though one would hope the game can happen due to the difficulty of rescheduling.
Unlike UEFA, which have strict rules on whether the match can be postponed, the Premier League has no set criteria for postponements. This has led to inconsistent rulings on whether games are postponed or not. For example, Arsenal had to play the opening game of the season with multiple COVID absentees, whilst Spurs have had their game postponed.
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers has reaffirmed his commitment to the game going ahead from a Leicester City perspective. When asked by the media on Sunday, he stated that he’s “keen for us to play the game” and that COVID absentees would open up a chance for youngsters to stake a claim. Leicester City themselves will be able to welcome back Daniel Amartey, a much-needed boost, despite the other seven ill players continuing to be absent.
Due to the medical confidentiality of the situation, the names of those on both sides who have tested positive are not named. One would hope that as long as both teams can field a full first team then the game would go ahead.
Whilst it is not an ideal situation to be in, multiple postponements are likely to upset the balance of competition. Equally, it can be argued the other way but some level of adaptation is necessary. A ‘bigger’ club such as Tottenham has greater resources and depth after all than most other clubs. Foxes fans must, therefore (depending on their views) hope there are no more positive cases and that Rodgers’ side can push on from their recent success.
