The Foxes find depth and a gem

It would be hard for any senior side to top the signings of the previous two seasons, which assembled a first team fit for the top quarter of the competition. However, Leicester City had another strong record in the 20/21 season.

The departures of Ben Chilwell, Demarai Gray, and Fousseni Diabate earned a combined fee of £48.40m, with most of that coming from ‘Chilly’ leaving Leicester for Chelsea. This large loss was immediately resolved the previous season by signing Justin.

There was no gap in the squad, so no need to spend big on a replacement again. Instead, the King Power side spend on a gem and depth. For a combined fee of £52.65m, Wesley Fofana, Timothy Castagne, and the loan move for Cengiz Under were completed.

A net expenditure of just £4.25m saw two senior first team candidates brought in and no loss of quality to the side. The ambitions were clear for all to see, cement the success of Brendan Rodgers and become Europa League regulars.

However, at this time, there remained critical problems with the side. For example, Evans, Tielemans and Jamie Vardy were all too critical for the side, any loss of them for an extended period could cause a large loss of form.

Additionally, with Under not made permanent, it was clear that Leicester still did not fill their right-wing gap after the departure of Riyad Mahrez. The season went really well, with Fofana the standout performer, but the Foxes missed out by a hair’s width on top four.
