Why Leicester must keep starlet from Man City and Newcastle
Leicester City youngster Ben Nelson is the subject of hot interest from top Premier League rivals. The Foxes must keep the starlet or lose out big.
All King Power supporters will have heard the name Nelson by now. The English defender is somewhat of a breakout star at Leicester. The 18-year-old has been critical to development sides, performing whenever called upon.
On top of this, Nelson has been on the bench for quite a few of Leicester’s senior Premier League and Europa League fixtures. There remains no doubt the player is destined for big things wherever he ends up.
Leicester City’s starlet scouted
A few rivals are scouting the young centre-back. As reported, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Newcastle United are scouting the player during his England international duty. The clubs are looking to strengthen their youth sides and take such a prodigious talent off the Foxes.
The central defender has been an England international for the youth sides for quite a while now. The exposure to larger clubs Nelson attains is certainly warranted, and there is nothing to worry about with that.
For our PL2 team, Nelson has played in 18 of their fixtures, as well as several U18 and U23 fixtures on top of that. When he has played, the Foxes have performed better, defended better, and scored more.
Why we must keep him
The benefits of a quality CB should be obvious. There is more to a defender than just making clearances. The English defender does so much more than that. Arguably, he is more significant than any of our attackers.
Brendan Rodgers will identify Nelson’s style to be similar to Jonny Evans, though a little more proactive and technically gifted. I would look at this player and see the potential as simply palpable. He must be kept.
To sell the English centre-back, the King Power club would have to be severely lacking in judgement. With Ben Grist and Nelson coming through the ranks, alongside Lewis Brunt, the Foxes have great defenders they will not have to buy.
Keeping all three will save money, progress the side in the future, and provide an opportunity to make money through loaning the defenders out. The only possible facet which could compel the Leicestershire outfit to actually sell this talent would be £10m for a youth defender. He will be worth more than that in two years’ time.
