Why important behind the scenes staff have left Leicester City
By Alice Wright
Head of football analytics, Mladen Sormaz has left Leicester City to join Miami-based firm 777 Partners to become Director of Football Analytics in their data department.
What Leicester City man did and why he left
Sormaz became our first head of analytics after joining in April 2019, has been involved in football analytics since 2016 and previously worked as a first team data analyst at Huddersfield Town and as a data scientist at Twenty3Sports.
Sormaz’s work at Leicester revolved around combining data along current departmental workflows to provide new insights across different departments at the club. He likely left City to join 777 Partners because of the far greater cash on offer in the private equity industry.
Ben Dinnery explains why some of the best behind the scenes are deciding to move away from football:
"“Working within elite sports, there are huge demands. The hours are difficult and so is the work-life balance. There is a lot of time spent on the road, and it’s not easy. It isn’t for everyone.“If someone comes along and offers you a lot more money and a better work-life balance, you’d be a fool not to give that some consideration.”"
The ex head of football analytics is now the second person from a Premier League club to relocate to 777 after Manchester City’s former chief strategy officer, Don Dransfield, joined as a strategist. 777 owns Genoa Cricket and Football Clubs in Italy, Standard Liege in Belgium and is pushing ahead with an agreement to buy Red Star FC in Paris. It is also negotiating a deal to buy Vasco da Gama in Brazil and has a minority stake in Seville in Spain.
Other staff members to recently leave
Lee Congerton left Leicester as Chief Scout to join Atalanta for the same role in March, after being with the Foxes for almost three years. The welshman allowed us to sign players such as; James Justin, Youri Tielemans and Wesley Fofana to name a few. Though there were some shockers, as well.
Dr Bryan English, head of medicine, who arrived at Leicester in the summer of 2020 from Middlesborough is another backroom staff member who is set to leave as his two year contract is said to have expired at the end of the season. A reshuffle is likely, following two terms of unprecedented issues. Replacements have been spoken about in media for both positions.
Why people like Mladen Sormaz may have better job satisfaction at LCFC
Although money sure does help, it’s not the key to happiness There is more than likely a long list of people waiting to take over from Sormaz. They might value being content at a job that they love and enjoy – more than vast amounts of money. LCFC is a particularly famous, ingenious and amazing project under the Srivaddhanaprabha family.
However, working in elite sport the demand is high and the hours are difficult with a lot of time spent of the road it is far from easy. Therefore, if someone was to come along and offer you a higher salary and better working hours, allowing to create a better work-life balance, you’d be silly not to snap their hand off.
