Youri Tielemans tipped to sign new Leicester City contract
Leicester City’s technical brain – Youri Tielemans – is edging closer towards a new deal with the club. Here is an update and our opinion.
Just a month ago, all the speculation around the King Power was the ‘when’ of an exit for ‘Starman’ Tielemans. There was little question of if: it was either UEFA Europa League favourites Arsenal or their North London rivals in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspurs.
A little frustratingly for supporters, all talk of that went eerily cold. Tottenham have gone on a signing spree and probably do not have the wage package remaining alongside other targets, where Arsenal signed Fabio Vieira instead.
Leicester City midfielder not wanted
In a transfer window characterised by a plethora of massive deals, big spending, myriad free transfers, and sheer volume of moves, Leicester have been quite the outlier along with Manchester United. There has been no new signings, no sales, only players being released for free.
It remains peculiar. As reported by HITC, the talks to take our Belgian ‘thinker’ to one of the North London clubs has gone silent. Alex Crook comments that there remains ‘rumblings’ of talks, the longer this situation stagnates the more likely it is that Tielemans remains.
It is not difficult to understand what factors may lead clubs not to want our ‘Starman’. For the Foxes, the No. 8 has high wage demands and in the second half of the 21/22 season, he went absent. Regarding the market, there are a lot of midfielders like him available.
However, we should still expect interest. Tielemans is a class talent – world class up until his injury. Of all Leicester players, the Belgian can play well anywhere through centre pitch, and can progress the ball unlike many players. A true box-to-box playmaking talent.
A good deal for Foxes
According to the same story, Brendan Rodgers’ side have matched the previously offered contract from Arsenal, as well as adding a release clause into his contract. There exists little information of the exact details regarding the deal, we only know it is expensive but protective.
Think of it this way: should the King Power club not have to replace Tielemans, we can focus on right-wing and centre-back positions with more money – so long as we sell enough. Chasing an attacking midfielder and our other targets becomes the priority.
Additionally, though the deal would likely become needlessly expensive, it does mean we are less likely to lose the Starman on a free in the near future. Hopefully Tielemans remains with the Foxes and can push on and drum up interest for next season.
