Reports have emerged claiming that Leicester City is interested in signing 36-year-old striker Edin Dzeko.

Dzeko was great for Inter Milan last season. In 49 appearances last season, he scored 17 goals and brought in eight assists. Even though the Bosnia and Herzegovina international played great, his minutes are likely to take a significant cut with Inter bringing in Romelu Lukaku on loan.

If the Foxes pull off this signing, it would be the Bosnian’s second run in the premier league. Dzeko first played for Manchester City in 2010. He spent five seasons there where he contributed 58 goals and 16 assists. Dzeko was then sold to Roma for €9.3million in 2016; he’s remained in Italy since.

The former Citizens star is about as complete a striker as they come. He’s just as good at scoring with his head as he is scoring with his feet. Only three times in his career did he score less than three goals in a season. Even though the finishing is very impressive, Dzeko can also pass the ball as well. One-twos, layoffs and through balls into the box also occur. For being a player that’s 6’4”, it’s impressive how good of a playmaker he is.

Dzeko is a talented player and he will have success anywhere he goes. However, this is a signing that Leicester needs to avoid for multiple reasons. Firstly, the most obvious issue with this potential signing is that forwards are in abundance on Filbert Way. Jamie Vardy is almost the same age and is more consistent in front of goal than Dzeko, Patson Daka was signed for £23M last season and he’s looking for a redemption campaign. In addition, we still have Kelechi Iheanacho.

A fourth striker is the last thing LCFC need right now. A winger, centre back, and potentially another midfielder is required. A centreforward isn’t a position of need. Plus, with Leicester having a low budget and being very patient in the market, this would feel like a waste of money. Another issue, Dzeko is 36 years old; How many years of high level production does he have left? Brendan Rodgers and the board should be looking for younger players that can also grow for the team.

If the EPL title-winner were to be signed, it would be hard to complain. He is very talented. However, there are many other issues that Leicester need to address before signing a 36 year-old striker. That’s why the King Power club shouldn’t sign Dzeko.
