Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana hands in transfer request
By Will Kennedy
Following his exceptional debut season, Fofana aimed to continue his growth in 2021/22, but was cruelly halted in a horrific pre-season injury in which he simultaneously broke his fibula and dislocated his ankle. His road to recovery lasted 223 days as he missed Leicester’s next 41 games. In his absence his influence was stark as the Foxes defence crumbled, something they are still working on.
His return was one of dreams, as he scored his first – and only – Leicester goal as they beat Rennes 3-2 on aggregate to reach the UEFA Conference League quarter finals, eventually being knocked out in the semi-final to Roma.
Due to injury, Fofana has only played 52 games for Leicester, but has become a favourite amongst the fans. Losing him would be catastrophic, with the number of viable replacements becoming slimmer and slimmer as the window ticks on.
Now, with just over two weeks of the window left, Leicester cannot afford to let this saga drag on much longer. Either green-light a move or reaffirm their stance of not selling. If they do sell, then the job to replace him is huge with a large margin for error. If they keep him, they risk having a Mahrez-esque strike on their hands; the last thing that an already pressured Rodgers needs.
You hope that the saga doesn’t turn sour, with fans already beginning to turn on the Frenchman. Fofana deserves to be remembered as a star, as one of the best to play in Leicester blue. A transfer feels inevitable, but Fofana needs to consider how much his legacy is worth. Either way, a difficult transfer window just got a whole lot trickier for City.
