There has reportedly been another Leicester City own goal, so to speak, as Caglar Soyuncu may perhaps leave for free next summer. What’s happening with the Turkey international?

Clearly under pressure Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers does not favour Soyuncu. Let’s just establish that very likely fact before going any further. The Northern Irishman chastised his player and banished the Turk from the starting lineup – or from involvement at all, in many instances – after losing a challenge against Cristian Romero of Tottenham Hotspur last season.

One admittedly bad tackle leading to another goal and poor result shouldn’t end an athlete’s career, at any club. Albeit the former Freiburg man was suffering a steady decline in performances long before that stage. A rapid decrease in quality when examined closely: in the past Soyuncu was generally considered a rising star amongst Premier League centre-halves. The 26-year-old was once as majestic as he was solid on Filbert Way.

Alas, those days are seemingly gone. Yet Soyuncu deserved a chance in the Daniel Amartey and Jannik Vestergaard days. At least Rodgers seems to have seen sense with regards to the latter pair of struggling defenders. Following many mixed signals, regular incorrect personnel choices and very inefficient or injudicious man management, Rodgers made a further attempts to clarify the former’s position at LCFC.

A new club for Leicester City centreback?

Whilst the player was well out of contention for the Leicester side before the transfer window closed, the east Midlands side’s hierarchy apparently rejected an offer via his home country. Unless it was a particularly low bid, surely Besiktas’ and Galatasaray’s interest was worthy of compromise to offload wages and an unwanted asset.

Rodgers went on to recently say that Soyuncu isn’t playing essentially because he isn’t showing enough in training. To question their commitment is an obvious jibe toward any professional. Subsequently the Leicester manager U-turned as he has so many times while at the King Power outfit, effectively saying the ‘door isn’t shut’ to the Izmir-born man.

Now that we know the onetime Altinordu athlete may receive another chance with Leicester – providing Rodgers is not sacked beforehand – fresh information emerges claiming the CB has already agreed to join another club when his contract expires next summer. A story on Leicester Mercury’s website suggests Soyuncu could depart for no fee in a year.

Atletico Madrid are named as the future destination. As Soyuncu’s value was said to be up to £40million at one point, this eventuality would be a combined own goal by the player’s own form, Rodgers’ mismanagement and LCFC’s uncharacteristic imprudent foresight.
