Foxes of Leicester ask Serie A expert for transfer target insight
By Will Kennedy
As January rolls on, Leicester City are getting closer to a potential deal for Nicolás González. The Argentinian attacker brings with him a vast array of quality, as well as the potential to improve.
González’s name hadn’t previously been linked to Leicester, with many fans expecting summer-target Jeremy Boga to be the winger Rodgers would bring in however, it now looks as if the Foxes are firmly poised on Fiorentina’s attacker. With a fee of £30m rumoured, it would be a huge move and Leicester’s first permanent January signing since 2018 when the club signed Fousséni Diabaté.
With González‘s name being unfamiliar to many before last week, Foxes of Leicester decided to reach out to Serie A commentator, Adam Summerton. Summerton covers the Serie A, Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, National League, and Ligue 1 for both BT Sport and Amazon Prime, so has a wealth of knowledge when it comes the Italian game. This is what the expert had to say when asked if González would make a good addition to Leicester’s pack:
Adam Summerton’s verdict on Leicester City-linked man
It’s an overall glowing review from Summerton who praises the 24-year-old’s feet and ability with the ball. Available to play across all three positions in attack, whilst many may view him as the long-awaited Mahrez replacement on the right, he could also offer healthy competition with Harvey Barnes on the left.
Barnes’ season has been a real mixed bag so far. When the Foxes were flying in October, we got to see the best of the academy-graduate, but in recent times his presence has been lacking. Unable to affect the game how he wants to, Barnes’ two missed shots against Nottingham Forest cost his side in their 2-0 loss on Saturday.
Primarily left-footed, González fits the profile of the left-footed right-winger that LCFC have been crying out for. Whilst he is a goal threat, the attacker also keeps his head up and is more than happy creating chances for his team to put away.
So far in Serie A he has played 40 games, scored nine goals and assisted seven more. During his three seasons in Germany with VfB Stuttgart, González scored 23 and assisted 10 in his 79 appearances.
In the 2021/22 season, the Argentinian took to Serie A like a duck to water, scoring seven and assisting seven more (as per Transfermarkt) and it looked as if he would kick off his second campaign in a similar style. Unfortunately, as Summerton notes, he has suffered a series of minor injuries that have stalled his progress.
Through various setbacks, the forward has missed 15 games for his club this season, limiting him to only 12 games for Fiorentina in 2022/23. Still, in those 12 games he has impressed, bagging five goals and setting up two more; he still has confidence in his ability, he just needs an injury-free streak to continue his progression.
It’s clear why Leicester and Rodgers think the Argentinian international is the type of player the club need. Currently they are a team that are missing a spark in attack, a man who can make all the difference. If Adam’s reply is anything to go by, the Foxes could be on their way to signing a top talent. Keep your eyes peeled for updates.
