There’s an old saying in football: never go back. While this is no hard and fast rule, there’s seldom been a time in the last few years where it rung so true where Leicester City are involved.

In the case of Danny Drinkwater, that this sentiment should even be brought out is bewildering, for the former Foxes man seemingly has his eyes set on a return to the King Power Stadium. Now 33 and without a club for the whole of last season, the Manchester-born midfielder has suffered nothing but misery since his departure from the East Midlands for Chelsea six years ago.

For many Foxes fans, there should be a dose of realism around the club’s scenario; it now sits in the EFL Championship, and it’s reasonable to predict that fans’ expectations for club signings might take a small time to adjust and be properly tuned. However, the fact that the Foxes are playing a division below is not a justification for taking on a player on the decline, so short of match action at any level.

Enzo Maresca is a smart man, he’ll see the quotes from Drinkwater this week about his eagerness to return to Leicester, and be savvy enough to stay well away from him. There’s an arrogance to what Drinkwater said, that he feels he can be the driving force to elevate the club, as though he hasn’t spent a whole season out of professional football, and before that was on loan at Reading.

Next. These Leicester City players must impress Enzo Maresca. dark

After former Fox N’Golo Kante made the big money move to Saudi Arabia last month, what’s to say Drinkwater can’t convince Al-Ittihad to let that iconic 2016 duo mix up for the third time after their spell at Chelsea? Tongue in cheek, perhaps, but there’s probably more chance of that happening than him donning the King Power shod shirt this season.
