Former Leicester City club captain Jonny Evans has made a surprise move to former club Manchester United on a very temporary deal. The Northern-Irishman who signed for the Foxes back in the summer of 2018 from West Bromwich Albion, opted to not sign a new contract with the newly relegated City side despite it being reported that there has been a contract offered to him by the club.

Although the 36-year-old captained LCFC throughout the last campaign the centre-back has spent much of the last two seasons struggling with injuries. He made just the 13 appearances in the league for the Foxes last season down from only 18 the year before. A clear sign of an aging player declining.

However, despite these injury stagnations Erik ten Hag was allegedly impressed with the centre-half during his training sessions with both the u21s and first team during United’s pre-season. Evans has been training at Carrington while he weighed up his options after not signing a new deal with the East Midlands club.

The brief stint will allow Evans to play the next two friendly games for the Red Devils. The first against Olympique Lyonnais and the second travelling to San Diego where they will face off against Wrexham FC.

This does not mean that Evans will not eventually resign with LCFC before the season kicks off. But with Enzo Maresca already signing two centre halves to his ranks, in Conor Coady for £8.5million and Callum Doyle on loan from Manchester City. It leaves the side with five first-team centre-backs, making chances in the first 11 extremely difficult for Evans, barring there are no outgoings in that department.

Even with the likelihood of the new boss opting to set-up with a back three for the upcoming season. There is a feeling that this new era will be needing new voices in the changing room and moving on from Evans with the likes of supposed leaders of Coady coming in. It is probably best for both parties if they remain separated, nonetheless the Northern-Irishman has been an excellent servant for the club during his five-year-tenure.
