Danish full-back Victor Kristiansen looks set to be joining Serie A side Bologna just eight months into his stint as a Leicester City player. Fabrizio Romano, arguably the most reputed and reliable football journalist currently, has stated that Kristiansen will be joining the Italian side on a loan deal with an option to buy given a successful medical test in the upcoming days.

Kristiansen was signed in the 2023 January window from FC Copenhagen for a Danish Superliga club record fee of £17m. The youngster made twelve league appearances for the Foxes but couldn’t prevent the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Unlike many of his teammates, Kristiansen committed to help the club get back up from the Championship as soon as possible.

However, Kristiansen doesn’t seem to be in Enzo Maresca’s plans for the foreseeable future. The Dane has failed to play a single minute in the Championship so far and has been omitted from the squad recently with Maresca preferring to have two goalkeepers on the bench.

Much of this exclusion lies with the fact that Kristiansen isn’t the type of player he wants at full back. Maresca prefers inverted full backs with Ricardo Pereira transitioning into the midfield as part of a pivot alongside Harry Winks and left back Callum Doyle playing as a Wide Centre Back. The former is a traditional full back and unfortunately doesn’t fit into Maresca’s tactics.

Kristiansen is undoubtedly a talented player though and Bologna will be stronger with him in the side. Given that his playing time would have been sporadic, minimal or non-existent if he had stayed, this move is beneficial to all parties. Foxes of Leicester would have liked to have seen more of the Dane in the previous season run-in. Leicester will be hoping to recuperate as much of the £17m fee they paid for him.
