The ability of the Foxes to bring on quality replacements as their opponent’s tire is a critical advantage. Squad depth will also be extremely valuable in a long season where injuries and suspensions are bound to play a part. Callum Doyle is out for a few months but the east Midlanders are able to bring in England international James Justin to replace him. Likewise, Jannik Vestergaard picked up a fifth yellow card and a one match suspension but will be replaced by another England international – Conor Coady – for the top of the table clash against Preston North End at the King Power stadium on Wednesday evening.

It is little wonder that the EFL, in their on-going negotiations with the Premier League, are said to be keen on scrapping the parachute payments that are currently paid for three years to relegated clubs and replacing it with a deal that distributes Premier League wealth more evenly amongst Championship sides. That will be too late, though, to impact the Foxes remorseless charge back to the big time.

More Leicester City pragmatism?

It seems churlish, in light of the win – which establishes a club record fifth consecutive away day victory at the start of a season – to be critical of Leicester’s performance. Nevertheless, this was by no means a walk in the park. Had Blackburn been more clinical in the final third the result could have been very different. It is certainly the case that a 1-4 score line flattered the visitors. In the second half, Blackburn dominated possession without really threatening too much.
