SOUTHAMPTON, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 16: Jamie Vardy rushes to celebrate with team-mate Kasey McAteer after he scores a goal to make it 2-0 during the Sky Bet Championship match between Southampton FC and Leicester City at Friends Provident St. Mary’s Stadium on September 16, 2023 in Southampton, England. Finally, the breakout star

On the wings, Mavididi has been a revelation: he is a technical, explosive, and defensively adept winger. However, it is not the former Arsenal and Juventus youth product I think is undroppable because Fatawu and Yunus Akgun can do the job if necessary. Upfront, it has to be the electric Kasey McAteer.

I would not have put my money on the English wing-back turned explosive inverted right-winger breaking into the starting XI and for a time being our top goalscorer and most prolific player. That was unexpected, and yet after it began, only an injury put a halt to it.

Linking up with Vardy, KDH, Winks, and Ricardo Pereira, McAteer has offered the truest glimpse of what the youth team can be. As we have seen, despite the injury the youth star remains our third highest goalscorer, and was exhibiting signs of being a real force to be reckoned with once he got his sometimes excessively ambitious shooting under control.

Anyway, once McAteer is back firing, Enzo Maresca cannot drop the breakout star unless he wants to create less devastating chances, as happened against Middlesbrough. Not to mention scoring less of those opportunities.
