In the 2016/17 season, Leicester City set an incredible UEFA Champions League record. However, this might be beaten by Aston Villa.

Little old Leicester City shocked the world when they were introduced to the UEFA Champions League in the 2016/17 season. Coming off the back of the infamous Premier League winning season, the Foxes were still not expected to go far in the Champions League.

However, Leicester flew by the group stages, making it to the knockouts. This was an achievement in itself, let alone reaching the quarter finals of the competition.

Let's not jump ahead of ourselves here. It was in the group stage where Leicester City impressed the most. In fact, they matched a pretty incredible record, which could be broken by Aston Villa.

Aston Villa could break Leicester’s incredible Champions League record

In the group stages of the 2016/17 season, Leicester City won their opening three group matches without conceding a goal. They beat Club Brugge, FC Porto and FC Copenhagen. In those three matches, Leicester scored five goals and conceded none.

Leicester City became only the second side in Champions League history to win their opening three games with no goals conceded. Before Leicester, it was Malaga.

Now, as pointed out by Leicester City News, this record could be broken by Aston Villa. Last night, Aston Villa matched the record, capping off a three-game win streak against Young Boys, Bayern Munich and Bologna.

Next up, Aston Villa face Club Brugge in their fourth Champions League fixture of the season. If they beat Brugge and keep a clean sheet, then Leicester's record will be broken by the fellow Midlands side.

However, fear not, Leicester fans. The record has not yet been broken but even if it is broken, it will never be forgotten. Leicester were underdogs and had an exceptional run in the Champions League. Memories like that will last a lifetime, regardless of where Leicester end up.

What do we think, Foxes? Can Steve Cooper pull off the unthinkable and qualify for Europe next season, or am I too deep down memory lane?
