The grass isn't always greener. You'll hear non-bitter but idealist Leicester City fans of a certain age utter this phrase every September. You may notice the saying in January as well. The comment refers to specific departed Foxes who used LCFC as a stepping-stone to get to other, supposedly 'bigger' clubs. Mostly the 'big moves' these ambitious and not necessarily loyal or honest professionals receive are too much for them to handle.
Although some former stars of the East Midlands outfit enjoy rare and exotic trophy lifts. And those few lucky footballers can label themselves as successful in their endeavours away from King Power Stadium. However, for every N'golo Kante, there are plenty of Danny Drinkwaters. Oh dear. While players who lay somewhere in-between those stories exist too.
I'm talking about the ballers for whom all seems well. You're in the team. You're winning. There are even trophies. Yet another signing is made in your position. A better full back. Somebody about to assume your role; then win the Euros as well. It's tough at the top! And it constantly gets tougher through competition and age creeping up on an athlete.
This is the final chapter of one ex-Leicester man's career, as it nosedives following winning the Champions League with Chelsea. Where is Ben Chilwell now?
Former Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell's career spirlled after winning Champions League
I lost a lot of respect for Chilwell when he refused to go into tackles and wrapped himself in cotton wool during his final months on Filbert Way. He clearly did so to ensure his transfer to the Blues went through.
A UCL victory transpired. But City won the FA Cup in a battle against the left back and his expensive teammates. His disallowed goal buoyed the Foxes! Although he was an unused substitute as Crystal Palace succeeded at Wembley this summer.
Nevertheless the LB never recovered his place at CFC. Predictably, Marc Cucurella took over. Now the 28-year-old finds himself at a mediocre side in Ligue 1:
