I would go so far as to say that Martin O’Neill was one of the best managers in the history of Leicester City Football Club. As a matter of fact, I think that sentiment is fairly widely held by members of the Foxes fan base. Not to mention plugged-in neutrals and observers surely arriving at that conclusion as well. I can tell you first-hand as a devotee of LCFC in the period before the Srivaddhanaprabha family arrived on Filbert Way to oversee our best-ever spell.
While O'Neill was in charge in LE2, City managed to qualify for three, yes three, Football League Cup Finals. Which was quite miraculous really, but not on the Premier League title-winning 2015/16 level by a long chalk. The East Midlands team actually won the League Cup (then the Coca-Cola Cup, I believe) twice on the Northern Irishman's watch. They were magical days too; I should know, I was at Wembley for one of them!
What Leicester evidently require at this very moment is a head coach like O'Neill. Scrap that - we could do with that man in particular. I am not suggesting that others wouldn't be superior to current gaffer Marti Cifuentes too. But the former is definitely high on my list. We must also be realistic too: eminent bosses won't come to a Championship side.
Although O'Neill recently proved himself still massively capable and a top manager at age 73 by helping out another one of his ex-teams, Celtic. So would the Kilrea-born boss come back to Leicestershire?
Are rumours concerning one-time Leicester City boss Martin O’Neill returning to the Foxes true?
City are yet to sack the floundering Cifuentes. Yet it must be stated that the Catalan wasn't backed financially during his still active LCFC tenure.
"It’s difficult to say [who could come in], but there’s one manager who I’d love to be there and that’s Martin O’Neill."TalkSPORT
At present, nothing concrete exists about the 43-year-old being dismissed. Similarly, only fan-driven comments on O'Neill and City are prevalent. He also revealed plans to restart pundit work.
