Leicester could regret appointing Russell Martin as he becomes the frontrunner

Leicester City could live to regret appointing Russell Martin as the ex-Southampton boss emerges as the frontrunner to replace Gary Rowett.

Talk surrounding who could replace Gary Rowett in the Leicester City hot seat has been rather quiet in recent weeks.

Of course, Rowett still has a contract in place at the King Power until the close of June, so the underwhelming manager - who could only pull off a weak two Championship wins last season - is still on the payroll, for the time being.

Past that point, it looks like Russell Martin will be handed the vacant job, with the ex-Southampton boss suddenly emerging as a frontrunner.

Martin is now the frontrunner

Indeed, the backpage of the Leicester Mercury on the 1st of June stated that Martin is now the "top choice for City" as written up by journalist Leigh Curtis.

This does add up, as another EFL-focused journalist, Alan Nixon, also recently stated that Leicester were pushing ahead to try and convince the one-time Rangers manager to come to the King Power, courtesy of a lucrative contract.

It remains to be seen whether making this pursuit so public will work in the Foxes' favour or not, with Martin clearly a talented manager on his day, having previously won promotion up to the Premier League when on the managerial sidelines of the Saints.

Yet, he did end his time with the South Coast club in depressing fashion, as they won just one of 16 Premier League matches, before he was given the boot.

Moreover, he struggled to get going at Rangers, to further ramp up the worry that he could be a colossal flop if he were to move to Leicester.

Leicester could go on to regret this appointment

The caveat here is that every manager, even those operating at their pinnacle of their craft, have failures on their CV.

Yet, it will be his record across the 2024/25 season and the 2025/26 season managing in England and in Scotland that will seriously worry Leicester fans, and make them think this could be an appointment that is plagued with regret down the line.

Across those two dire campaigns, from Martin's perspective, the 40-year-old would collect just two wins from 23 total clashes, with the out-of-work boss seriously floundering under the intense pressure of managing a footballing giant, when in the Ibrox hot-seat.

Leicester cannot afford to have a slow start next season, as they look to instantly return to the Championship, and with Martin at the helm, this is a very real possibility.

He isn't a manager you'd want in the trenches with you, as he failed to find solutions to both Southampton and Rangers slumping in form under his guidance, with a hostile atmosphere at the King Power likely to see him crumble, rather than thrive.

In the eyes of Football League World, too, who spoke to a Leicester fan pundit recently, he wouldn't be the right fit for the Foxes in their current crisis, as they require a manager who will make the Midlands side a "gut-busting" watch, as opposed to trying to walk the ball in the net.

It is fascinating trying to work out how this ongoing search for a new manager will end, with the powers that be at the King Power certainly keen on Martin, even with his all these struggles working against him.
