10 years ago, Leicester City were enjoying a season that culminated in Premier League success. The shock win of the 2015/16 season is a far cry from where the club is now.
It was always going to be difficult for Leicester to sustain their place at the top of English soccer. However, they did go on to win the FA Cup in 2021. That was to be the club's last hurrah as the COVID-19 pandemic led to financial problems for their owners, King Power, who are a travel retail group.
Leicester were relegated in 2023, and whilst they bounced back immediately, they dropped back down to the Championship after just one season in the Premier League.
Since Claudio Ranieri led Leicester to winning the Premier League title, they have had 11 different managers in charge. This has included some big names such as Ruud van Nistelrooy, Brendan Rodgers, and Enzo Maresca.
The club's most recent manager, Marti Cifuentes, was sacked after just six months in charge of the Foxes. Leicester fans will not be enamoured with the options to replace him.
Who is in the frame to replace Marti Cifuentes at Leicester City?
The Daily Mail has reported that Gary Rowett and Derek McInnes are in the frame for the Leicester job. Rowett played for the Foxes but was recently sacked by Oxford United. Despite this, he has vast experience in managing in the EFL at club's includign Millwall, Stoke City, and Derby County. However, he has never led a team to promotion from the Championship.
McInnes is the Heart of Midlothian manager, who is currently top of the Scottish Premiership. It is highly unlikely that the McInnes would walk away from Hearts in a campaign where they could make history. However, he could be an option for the Foxes in the summer.
According to Football Insider, Russell Martin is also being considered by Leicester. Martin guided Southampton to promotion from the Championship. However, his insistence on playing out from the back despite poor results led to him being sacked mid-way through a season where the Saints were relegated. He since had a disastrous spell in charge of Rangers.
With Leicester currently 14th in the Championship, they need someone to steady the ship for the remainder of the season. However, a club of the Foxes' pedigree should be looking to return to the Premier League in the near future.
